“Independent and fearless…for the measureless future”
From the first day we printed, June 18, 1889, the editors of Bangor Daily News declared their mission. 136 years later, this continues to be true — because of readers like you.
Our founding fathers knew the value of it too, when they included protection for the free press in the Bill of Rights. For democracy to work, citizens need journalism. We take this seriously as we cover what’s happening in our communities and local governments — even more so in the face of big tech companies that extract advertising dollars, starving the same local publishers they rely on for content.
Those big companies aren’t invested in Maine. We are.
At BDN we believe every voice deserves to be heard, which is why we work across the state to protect local journalism and the quality of life in Maine communities through reporting and partnerships. No one tells us what to write, and we don’t back down.

Share with your friends and family why local journalism is an essential community service, what difference it has made for you, and why you support it. Many people don’t realize what has been happening to the local news industry, and how many towns, cities and counties are losing local reporting — or what happens to communities when their newspapers disappear. The “State of Local News” report is a good resource to share with folks who are curious.
